Nepali Cricket Facts




  1. Cricket was introduced in Nepal in 1920s by Madan Shamsher, the son of Rana Prime Minister Chandra Shamsher.
  2. The game was exclusively played by elites in the beginning.
  3. Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN), established in 1946, is the oldest sports association in the country. Unfortunately, currently it is suspended by the International Cricket Council (more on the suspesion later).
  4. Vishnu Trophy, Madan Shamsher Memorial Trophy, J Trophy, etc. were the earlier trophies in Nepal.
  5. Tundikhel was the major ground for more than five decades.
  6. Nepal became the affiliate member of the ICC in 1988 and associate member in 1996.
  7. TU (Tribhuvan University) Cricket Ground is the main cricket ground of Nepal.
  8. Nepal played the first international match against Bangladesh in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 6 September, 1996.
  9. Nepal played first class cricket in 2004, the matches of the ICC Intercontinental Cup.
  10. In the ACC Trophy of 2006, Nepal bowled Myanmar out for just 10 off 12.1 overs. No Myanmar batsman scored more than one, five were ducked and extras top scored with five (three leg byes and two wides). Mehboob Alam and Binod Das picked up seven wickets and three wickets respectively. In reply, Nepal reached the target in two balls. The first ball went for three, which was followed by five wides. Another three runs came up in the legitimate delivery.
  11. In May 2008, Mehboob Alam picked all ten wickets against Jersey in Jersey to set a world record.
  12. In 2007, Nepal defeated New Zealand to lift the ICC U19 World Cup Plate Championship (i.e. winner among the teams that could not go past the first round.) The Nepali Team included current national players Paras Khadka and Shakti Gauchan, while New Zealand team included "World Class" players like Tim Southee, Martin Guptill and Ross Taylor.   13. Nepal played the ICC World T20 in 2014 in Bangladesh. Nepal was slotted in Group A with Hong Kong, Bangladesh and Afghanistan. Nepal defeated Hong Kong and Afghanistan, but lost with Bangladesh. Only one team would go to another round, so Nepal was unfortunate. Nepal was the only team in the entire tournament that bowled no wide or no-ball.
  14. Basanta Regmi was the first bowler to get 100 wickets in the World Cricket League.
  15. Sri Lankan coaches Roy Luke Dias and Pubudu Dasanayake shaped the Nepali cricket team for almost fifteen years.
  16. On November 12, 2017, Nepal defeated the defending champion India in the ACC U19 Asia Cup. Rahul Dravid, the India U19 coach, appreciated Nepalese boys. Though it's exciting, it won't be surprising if some Indian players will make a name in the international cricket. (See: Point 12)
  17. Nepal's cricket board is in suspension because of its corruption and inefficient management since 2015.
