He knows he has it him, he knows his abilities, limitations and that is why he succeeds 9 out of 10 times on field.
This lad was already so talented and over the last 4 years he has enhanced his skills by improving overall body fitness. He is one of the most fit players in Cricket along with the likes of AB Develliers , Faf du Plessis and Steven Smith. Fitness helps in batting a lot because your arms start moving faster reacting to brain signals. This reduces chance of edges and you get your timing right with perfect hand, eye, brain cordination. I have seen legends like Sehwag and Ganguly struggling against pace bowling because of their slow body movement. But nothing can trouble this man. A legend already at such small age.
His focus on each ball is impeccable. Whether it is first or last ball of the innings/session he never gets casual and you will never see Virat Kohli giving away wicket easily.
India is really lucky to have Virat Kohli after the departure of Dravid and Tendulkar from Cricket. Kohli has the mettle to carry millions of expectations from Indian fans. Because of him, Indian team looks like a force to reckon with. They have potential to beat any side in any country.
Few other things which I feel he has improved over the last few years and has made him almost perfect now are:
- He is not easy to distract now and now he seldom gets into arguments with other players or umpires.
- He learns from his mistakes. He is yet to perform well in England in Tests but he has improved his records in Australia in last tour.
- He seldom goes for extravagant shots in International Cricket (In IPL he does). You will never see Kohli giving away his wicket trying for a reverse sweep, paddle sweep or a dil scoop. He always put a heavy price on his wicket and he plays in his limitations.
- He doesn’t go into shell and always remain positive. He always look to score. I have seen legends like great Sachin Tendulkar sometimes become too defensive and eventually giving their wicket away. This is not the case with Kohli.
- His ability to handle pressure is unmatchable. Only Rahul Dravid had that characteristic. Even if India side is 3 down or 4 down, Virat Kohli will stand up and gets India out of trouble any day. He is a master in chase.
- His ability to hit sixes. Regardless of what Virat says, apparently he has improved his ability to hit sixes a lot more. This has made him the best t20 player too in Indian side.
Well, success doesn’t have one secret. Its a combination of support from fellow players, talent, luck, fitness regimes, diet and execution of plans on field.
He is an inspiration for all in every walk of life. One should always keep on sharpening his axe and should not get contented. There is always room for improvement.
